All the elderberry bushes are going gangbusters this year. We have several on the property near the house that were planted, but also have more than several wild versions scattered throughout the property. Similarto the grapes, where we have some cultivated vines, and also some wild vines, it's interesting to see how they differ in their growth and when they ripen.
The pictures below are of elderberry. Some flowers still linger while other portions the berries are quite visible. It's an interesting and beautiful combination.

For the most part we just don't ponder the origin of commonplace expressions because they are... common. The first thing I discovered when beginning to read this little gem of a book, was not only hadn't I considered where many common sayings come from, but my preconceived idea of their origin was actually wrong!
